Marine Agency Corp was founded in 1922 and was then located in New York City. At that time, we only offered “marine” coverages (ocean cargo, shipping, and the like). Following the Great Depression, it became necessary to diversify our product offerings and began writing policies for all types of businesses. An early success was in coverage for barber shops and beauty salons. Our then President, Darryl C Stevens, joined the agency in 1975. Under Darryl’s leadership, we built on our experience covering personal care businesses and expanded during the 1980’s to also provide coverage for electrology (permanent hair removal) and aesthetics (skin care) businesses.
By 1996, the day spa explosion was in full swing… and our underwriters were ready to grow with us and the industries we serve. Under Darryl’s continued guidance and the help of Mary Lynne Blaesser CIC (Marketing Director) and R Chas. Stevens II, CIC CRM CISR (current President), Marine Agency Corp became a full-fledged “managing general agent” and established itself as the day spa insurance expert. At the same time, our insurance agency also became the only national provider of an admitted, occurrence form insurance policy for tattoo, body piercing, and micropigmentation (cosmetic tattooing) professionals.
During the following decades, Marine Agency has become the leading provider of high-quality business insurance coverage for a variety of personal care and image enhancement industries. Following a lengthy application process, we were approved as “London Coverholders” in 2016 based on our strong underwriting team, and deep understanding of the industries we serve. This allows our experts to work directly with the London markets, and to more readily adapt to new types of businesses, services offered, and risks of loss.
Marine Agency was officially certified as a climate neutral company on April 27, 2021. We’re looking ahead to the future, and are taking steps now to ensure a sustainable business model for ourselves and our customers. It’s critical that we all do what we can to ensure the health of our planet. Stability in the marketplace is critical; and there is no more important place to start than with our physical environment.
Our acquisition of Affordable Insurance Network (Bear, Delaware) in 2021 will allow us to offer expanded access to many new home and personal auto insurance companies … and will give us the ability to provide bilingual services in the future (Spanish/English). We’re excited to help more customers who are more comfortable speaking Spanish and are committed to supporting that community over the years to come.
Today, Chas. oversees the agency operations and spends time with local commercial customers throughout New Jersey.
