Dozens of Connecticut Towns Sue Pharmacies over Opioid Distribution

29 Connecticut municipalities have filed a federal lawsuit against three of the state's largest opioid distributors.

According to the complaint, "this case arises from the worst man-made epidemic in modern history." District Court. Bridgeport District Court will meet on Wednesday.

Walgreens Boots Alliance Inc., Walmart Inc., CVS Health Corp., and Rite Aid Corp. are named as defendants in the lawsuit. Bridgeport, Waterbury, Fairfield, Milford, West Haven, New Milford, Shelton, Stratford, and Newtown are among the plaintiffs.

Waterbury attorney Devin Hartley Jr. filed the lawsuit on behalf of the 29 municipalities, but he did not respond to requests for comment.

The defendants' spokespeople could not be reached for comment immediately.

Rather than specific monetary damages, the 126-page complaint seeks "public nuisance abatement," compensatory and punitive damages.

"Defendants have created an ongoing condition of danger that is causing permanent and long-term damage by distributing and dispensing opioids for profit and for use by plaintiffs' employees and residents," the lawsuit claims.

"The defendants' actions, in fact, resulted in deaths, serious injuries, and significant interference with public health."
