As October winds down, the Atlantic hurricane season seems to be calming, with the odds of another named storm this month rapidly diminishing. Hurricane Milton may go down in history as the final named storm of October 2024. Currently, two tropical disturbances are being monitored, but their chances of developing into significant storms remain slim.

One of these disturbances, dubbed Invest 94L, is moving near the northern Leeward Islands. Despite the warm sea temperatures that typically support storm development, dry air and fast forward movement are hindering 94L’s progress. Experts predict it will dissipate before becoming a named storm, with the National Hurricane Center assigning just a 30% chance of development within the next week. The disturbance may, however, bring heavy rain to areas such as the Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico.

In the western Caribbean, another disturbance is expected to bring torrential rain to parts of Central America and southeastern Mexico, with rainfall totals possibly exceeding 20 inches in some areas. Although the system poses little threat of developing into a hurricane, the potential for flash flooding and mudslides remains high.

While October’s storm potential is fading, forecasters warn that the Atlantic hurricane season isn’t over just yet. With the Madden-Julian Oscillation expected to move into the region in November, which encourages rising air and tropical development, there’s still a possibility for new storms to form next month.

In the meantime, the focus shifts to the North Indian Ocean, where tropical cyclone season is about to ramp up. Models predict that the Bay of Bengal could see its first storm of the season by next week, setting the stage for potentially significant weather events in that region.

Stay updated as conditions evolve, and remain prepared for the unpredictable nature of hurricane season.
