Hurricane Helene Set to Hit Florida as a Major Storm, Threatening the Southeast

A massive Hurricane Helene is rapidly approaching Florida, expected to make landfall as a major storm with destructive winds, life-threatening storm surges, and heavy rains. Currently located about 460 miles southwest of Tampa, the hurricane is moving across the Gulf of Mexico and intensifying as it heads toward Florida’s Big Bend region. The U.S. National Hurricane Center predicts the storm will strike Thursday evening, with a storm surge of up to 20 feet in some areas, enough to engulf homes and flood coastal communities.

Residents throughout Florida and the Southeast are scrambling to prepare, with evacuations underway, schools closed, and states of emergency declared. The hurricane's powerful winds extend as far as 345 miles from its center, and forecasters warn that the storm’s impact will be felt far inland, reaching Georgia and the Carolinas. Widespread power outages, downed trees, and dangerous flooding are expected across the region.

As Helene inches closer, the urgency for residents to seek higher ground and stay informed remains critical.
