The Insurance Industry Charitable Foundation (IICF), a unique nonprofit organization dedicated to helping communities and enriching lives, today released the key takeaways and learnings from the 2022 IICF Inclusion in Insurance Regional Forums in New York, Los Angeles, Dallas, Chicago and London. IICF detailed actionable insights from top industry leaders in a white paper titled “Advancing Ideas into Action.” These findings set the tone for the future of the industry’s work in making the insurance industry a fully inclusive space.
The white paper recognizes and celebrates the progress the industry has made and defines and discusses next steps around the forums’ themes of: diversity, equity and inclusion; sustainability; the future of work and mental health and wellness.
The report identifies common themes that industry leaders and experts shared across all five forums. One of the major takeaways was that honest assessment and perseverance will be required to bring about a fully inclusive future with equality of opportunity. Building an inclusive culture in the workplace isn’t a one-and-done, and it cannot be accomplished from just the top down or the bottom up. It requires continuous work from all levels of the organization.
Creating a more diverse future also means taking the leap and challenging the norm to ensure there are seats at the table for leaders of diverse backgrounds, including more women, people of color and nontraditional talent. Fostering a more diverse and inclusive workforce is not only the right thing to do, but studies continually show this also leads to a stronger business.
“Having this dialogue, making personal connections and celebrating the work of our industry is imperative as we continue to advance ideas into action and forge ahead in helping the insurance industry build upon its successful initiatives,” said Bill Ross, IICF CEO. “This report reflects the energy and excitement that was palpable in the rooms this year, as well as the ideas and fresh approaches to DEI, sustainability, inclusivity and more that we are excited to see flourish in our industry.”
Other important takeaways and learnings highlighted in the report, include the following:
- Advancing DEI will take new thinking and continued conversation.
- To achieve and hardwire inclusivity, organizations should keep pushing for even small improvements, which can result in substantially better outcomes.
- Leaders can help build more inclusion and empathy in their organizations by embracing the concept of psychological safety.
