More Florida Insurers Request Property Rate Hikes

Floridians have been squeezed by double-digit increases in property insurance rates. Some have had their policies cancelled, while others have had to pay for a new roof out of pocket before they can get a new policy. On Tuesday, one insurer asked state regulators to approve a nearly 50% rate increase on its homeowners policies.

Is the FL home insurance crisis coming to an end?

The Florida Office of Insurance Regulation held a hearing during which the Florida Farm Bureau requested a 48.7 percent increase in its homeowner policy rate.

First Floridian requested a 22.9 percent increase, while Kin Interinsurance requested a 25.1 percent increase.

The large rate increase requests highlight the state's property insurance market's precariousness.

According to insurers, the crisis is man-made, the result of an increase in litigation, rising reinsurance rates, and even fraud.

Gov. Ron DeSantis has called a special session of lawmakers for a week next week to pass legislation to stabilize the market.

Many people will be paying close attention to the session.

""It's just become very difficult to place coverage, to get coverage here in the state of Florida, and any assistance we could get would be tremendous," said Andy Ray, an insurance agent in Altamonte Springs.

Ray stated that many of his clients are in financial difficulty.

He hopes that the upcoming session will result in some relief, as does attorney Andreas Study of Farah and Farah, who represents homeowners who file insurance claims.

""I hope they can take a balanced approach and put together some legislation that will help create a healthy insurance market without jeopardizing policyholder or homeowner rights," Study said.

Gov. Ron DeSantis has called lawmakers back to the Capitol for a weeklong special session beginning May 23 to pass market-stabilizing legislation.
