A recent Lending Tree study, as Kelley Blue Book reported, reveals that Tesla drivers reported more insurance incidents than drivers of any other car brand in 2024. The study, which analyzed data from Lending Tree users who input their driving history to compare insurance rates, found that Tesla drivers experienced 37 insurance-related incidents per 1,000 drivers, marking an increase from 31 in 2023.

Tesla Takes the Top Spot in Reported Incidents

The study defines insurance incidents as accidents, DUIs, speeding tickets, and other traffic citations. While Tesla drivers led in reported incidents, Ram drivers, who topped the list in 2023, ranked second in 2024 with 34 incidents per 1,000 drivers. Subaru owners followed closely with 33 incidents.

Ram Drivers Dominate in Some States

Despite ranking second overall, Ram drivers reported the highest number of incidents in nearly a third of U.S. states. New Jersey stood out with 74 incidents per 1,000 Ram drivers, a figure that significantly surpasses the national average.

Who Has the Safest Driving Record?

Mercury owners reported the fewest insurance incidents at the opposite end of the spectrum, with 19 per 1,000 drivers. Since Mercury ceased production in 2011, owners of these aging vehicles may drive cautiously to preserve their cars. Pontiac drivers, another defunct brand, also ranked among the safest.

Cadillac drivers had the lowest incident rate among currently operating automakers, reporting just 21 insurance incidents per 1,000 drivers.

Understanding the Findings

The study does not indicate whether Tesla’s higher incident rate is due to driver behavior, the performance capabilities of the vehicles, or other factors such as increased miles driven. However, the rising numbers highlight the importance of driver awareness, proper insurance coverage, and safe driving practices—regardless of vehicle brand.

For drivers looking to compare insurance options, studies like these provide insight into how driving history and vehicle choice can impact insurance rates.
