The storm that struck the north side of Dayton hit around 11 p.m., National Weather Service officials said, leaving a miles-long path of devastation with downed trees, homes with their roofs torn off and many damaged vehicles. Investigators were being dispatched Tuesday morning to survey the wreckage and determine the strength of the storm. So far, no deaths and only minor injuries have been reported.
“It’s kind of amazing considering how much damage there is,” said Myron Padgett, a meteorologist with the weather service in Wilmington, Ohio.
One person was reported killed and several injured in a second possible tornado about 60 miles north of Dayton in Celina, Ohio, Mr. Padgett said.
The weather service is also looking at several other possible tornadoes across the state. One storm swept across Interstate 75, leaving a trail of debris that had to be cleared with snowplows, he said.
