In a speech to commercial insurance buyers on Thursday, AIG Chief Executive Martin Sullivan stated that the company is prepared to take advantage of any investment opportunities created by the problems in the U.S. subprime mortgage sector.

"What I have asked my colleagues to do is to make sure that we are well positioned when we see opportunities," said Mr. Sullivan in remarks at the Deutscher Versicherungs-Schutzverband e.V symposium in Munich, Germany.

"We are taking some advantage of that now, but I am sure other opportunities will emerge over the next weeks and months, and there is no better company than AIG to respond to those opportunities," said Mr. Sullivan, who declined to say specifically what those opportunities might be.

Specific areas within NY-based AIG have residential mortgage exposure and the insurer's investment and credit officers were monitoring developments closely, Mr. Sullivan said.

"Based on these monitoring activities, we believe that these business and our investors are very well positioned, even in the event of further deterioration in the marketplace," he added.
