BREAKING NEWS: Spitzer Resigns, Apologizes to Family

"I cannot allow my private failings to affect my public work," said Eliot Spitzer during a scheduled conference this morning as he resigned from his governorship of New York. His resignation is effective on Monday, March 17th to permit a smooth transition.

Spitzer thanked supporters, asked to be forgiven for his transgressions from his family and New Yorkers and asked his constituency to join him in supporting David Paterson in his position as governor.

"The remorse I feel will always be with me and words cannot describe how grateful I am for the love and copmpassion they [family and supporters] have shown me," Spitzer said.

Spitzer did not take any questions, stating he has begun the process of atoning for his transgressions.

Mr. Spitzer's resignation comes after federal prosecutors linked Spitzer to a high-end prostitution ring. He had apologized to his family and the people of New York earlier in the week for an undisclosed personal indiscretion although he did not make reference to the allegations.

Lt. Gov. David Paterson will become the first black governor of New York and the fourth in U.S. history. The former state Senate minority leader, who is legally blind, is the son of Basil Paterson, a longtime Democratic operative in New York City.
