CO University Ups its Hurricane Prediction to Nine

Colorado State University hurricane forecasters are now reporting that nine hurricanes will occur in this year's Atlantic hurricane season, upping their count from what they predicted in June.

In a forecast released on Tuesday, the team also increased its estimate of intense hurricanes—those packing sustained winds of at least 111 miles per hour—to five from the four forecast in June. The most recent forecast also predicts that 17 named tropical storms will form this year, compared with 15 in June.

The team said the new forecast reflected "a combination of a very active early tropical cyclone season in the deep tropics and more favorable hurricane-enhancing sea surface temperature and sea level pressure patterns in the tropical Atlantic."
