According to Aetna, earnings for the period amounted to $431.6 million, or 85 cents per share, in the three months ended March 31 compared with year-ago earnings of $434.6 million, or 81 cents per share. Earnings per share rose while overall earnings declined because the health insurer had fewer shares outstanding.
Revenue for the company gained 16 percent to $7.74 billion from $6.70 billion, slightly beating analysts’ projections, prompted by an increase in medical membership by 614,000, to 17.5 million, an increase in dental membership by 334,000 to about 14.2 million, and pharmacy membership, which increased by 219,000 to 10.95 million.
