Insurers on the Scene in Tornado-torn Midwest

Insurers in the Midwest are responding to those affected by the tornadoes that hit the region.

Farmers Insurance Group of Companies is advising its customers suffering damage from the recent tornadoes in Manhattan, Chapman and Salina, Kansas.

"It's still early to know the full extent of the damage these tornadoes caused, but we are prepared and ready to help in any way we can," said Dana Russell, State Executive Director of Farmers in Kansas. "We are closely monitoring the damaged areas and have brought in additional resources to help our customer file claims and restore their lives as quickly as possible."

Allied Insurance is also on the scene, with claim representatives continuing to assist customers in Kansas and Nebraska in response to recent windstorms, hail, and tornadoes. Procedures are in place to provide quick response to customer needs. Individuals affected by the storms can take steps to protect property from further damage: -- Make sure the electric source adjacent to the damaged area is disconnected.

At least two people were dead in Kansas and four in Iowa after deadly tornadoes tore through the U.S. Midwest late on Wednesday, including one that hit an Iowa boy scout camp where dozens were gathered for a summer retreat, state officials said.

In Iowa, 92 campers and 25 adults were attending the Little Sioux camp when the tornado struck, said Tina Potthoff, spokeswoman for the Iowa Emergency Operations Center.

Potthoff said in addition to the four dead, at least 20 and possibly up to 40 people were injured.

Iowa officials said the state National Guard had been mobilized to assist in search and rescue operations, work that was complicated by the heavily treed area where the camp was located and additional lightning strikes and heavy rain.

The deadly twisters were among more than 30 that roared through four Midwestern states.
