The Ohio Insurance Institute reported Thursday that winds from Hurricane Ike last Sept. 14 resulted in more than $1.14 billion in insured losses, making it the state's largest natural disaster in recent times. The estimate does not include local government cleanup costs, which so far total $36 million.
The institute also has released a preliminary report on the storm with gusts of up to 76 mph that blew through Ohio one month ago. Insurers say fallen trees and limbs caused about $89 million in damage, including broken windows and siding and roofing ripped from homes.
