Pennsylvania Lumbermens Mutual Insurance Company (PLM), the largest mutual insurer dedicated to wood-related businesses and rated A- (Excellent) by A.M. Best, raised over $140,000 for childhood cancer research during their head-shaving fundraiser benefiting the St. Baldrick’s Foundation. The head-shaving event took place at the Lowes Hotel in Philadelphia during PLM’s National Meeting. Proceeds support the largest non-government funder of childhood cancer research grants.
“Thank you to everyone who dedicated their time, money and of course, hair to such an important cause,” said John Smith, president and CEO of PLM. “Having been involved myself with St. Baldrick’s for over 15 years, I am incredibly grateful that our community showed up to make a difference. I’m proud of the work both PLM and our partners within the insurance and wood industries put forward here to support such a critical cause.”
PLM was joined by a Philadelphia Mummers string band for live entertainment and drew the attention of local television news stations. The enthusiasm in the room even encouraged a newly-hired team member to stand up at the last minute and ask to have his head shaved. At this request, Smith made a commitment to match donations up to a total of $1,500 in support of the last-minute shavee’s campaign. A total of 17 PLM team members braved the shave including John Smith and Vice President of Marketing Lindsey DiGangi.
